So I made this blog months ago but haven't posted yet, whoops. Nothing interesting was happening yet, but now it's only 2 days before I move to Tokyo so I figured I should start now.
So yeah, on Wednesday I am getting on a plane and flying to Tokyo! I've gotten everything sorted out, I'm doing a homestay somewhat near Waseda, and I'm just planning out my courses. I'm kind of really terrified about the homestay because I'm super awkward and super shy, but I wanted to get ~the full experience~ and thought it'd be nice to stay with a family. There's also apparently another exchange student staying at the same house with me, so hopefully I'll have a friend. I am worried though, right now my contract is only for a month because they want to "try me out" first (it was extremely difficult to find a family for me because no one wanted to deal with my mental health issues so they kept rejecting me - this was the best they could find) and if they aren't comfortable with me I'm going to have to live in a share house. I'm hoping they won't have a problem, my mental health issues only really create trouble for myself and no one I live with so.
Also, the other day I received some good news, Waseda is giving me the JASSO scholarship! Which is 80,000¥/month (roughly ~830$/month). Before I was getting a bit worried about money, but this has really calmed me down about that. I also have student loans, RESP money (don't know how much is left of that though...), and my scholarships still from high school. People always say how expensive Japan (especially Tokyo) is, but if you know where to go and where to eat it really doesn't have to be that expensive, so I should be okay (will be living off of convenience store rice balls and melon bread for the year).
As for courses, the only thing I have yet to do is take the JCAT (sounds like MCAT and PCAT, but I'm not trying to get into med school here) so I can find out my Japanese level and pick out the courses I want to take. Course registration isn't until the 18th of September, and classes don't start until the 25th, so I'll have some time to wander around Tokyo again and explore Waseda. I also need to get a cell phone and start a Japanese bank account, no idea how to at the moment, but hopefully my host family can help me find out.
& that's about it! The next time I post I will be in Tokyo!
また来年、バンクーバー。
Great to see you've started a blog! Hope you keep updating it even when you're busy. Will miss you during the year you're gone, but I'm sure you'll learn lots and will experience new, fascinating things about the culture and people you love so much. Certainly lots of stigma about mental health in Asian cultures, but I'd bet big bucks that your host family will love you cause you're pretty awesome. Safe travelling and don't forget to keep in touch with us hicks back in the land of igloos and polar bears!
thank you!! I'll miss all you hicks and your polar bears too, please send me over some moose
